A pleasant stroll through the romantic alleyways of the old town is one of the highlights of a stay in the Moselle town. The small, lovingly restored stores and stores, the inviting restaurants, wine taverns and cafés. The impressive half-timbered houses dating back centuries promise pure Moselle enjoyment. Bernkastel's many sights include the historic market square, the Renaissance town hall and the Michaelsbrunnen fountain, both dating from the early 17th century, as well as the "Spitzhäuschen", which is almost 200 years older. They bear eloquent witness to a great and often magnificent past.
Historic buildings and glittering festivals
The "Graacher Tor" museum of local history vividly illustrates the town's eventful history. St. Michael's Church, with its mighty 600-year-old tower, is one of the most remarkable buildings. The Bernkasteler Doctor is the town's most famous wine, and the legend of the healing of a sick elector by this very wine can be admired at the Doctor Fountain on the shore (not far from the Moselle).
Landshut castle ruins in new splendor
The grandiose Landshut Castle, first mentioned in the 9th century, towers high above the city. It served as the residence of archbishops and electors. A walk to the castle, which was destroyed by fire in 1692, is rewarded with a magnificent view over the Moselle region.
The Middle Moselle wine festival, the Christmas market, the summer stage - just three examples of the distinctive festival culture in Bernkastel. Bernkastel, with its intact medieval center, not only provides an insight into bygone eras.
