The Maare-Mosel cycle path can be travelled in both directions, but is used by most cyclists, inline skaters and hikers from Daun to Bernkastel-Kues. The "RegioRadler" offers comfortable transport by a bike bus to the desired starting point of the tour. From the train station in Daun, you start your biketour towards the Moselle valley. You will soon pass a 28-meter-high viaduct, with a magnificent view of Daun. Through a wooded area you cycle slightly uphill until you reach the "Große Schlitzohr", a 560-metre long, former railway tunnel. On a level road, the cycle path takes you past the Schalkenmehrener Maar and the Sangweiher nature reserve. Near Gillenfeld you can make a detour to the Pulvermaar on one of the "Erlebnisschleifen" (additional tour). Around Daun and Manderscheid you can "experience" the area on eight "Erlebnisschleifen". During a boat trip on the Pulvermaar you can enjoy the crystal clear water and the natural peace and quiet. Shortly afterwards, you can ride along the "Erlebnisschleife Lavabomben-Route" in the Vulkanhaus Strohn, a well-known museum in the Vulkaneifel European Geopark. Here you have the opportunity to marvel at the mighty lava fissures, smell the volcanic gases and explore the walk-in adventure rooms. A 120 ton lava ball, which is enthroned at the end of the village Strohn, is a real eye-catcher, especially for children. Via the village Eckfeld it is only a short distance to village of Pantenburg, where you can let yourself roll down to the next village which is called Niedermanderscheid. The magnificent fortifications of the "Nieder- and Oberburg" (castle) are particularly worth seeing. Every year on the last weekend of August the Manderscheid Castle Festival takes place here. This nationally known event offers knight tournaments and damsel disguise, food and drinks as in the Middle Ages as well as spectacle and play.Manderscheid offers another highlight with the Maarmuseum. Children and also families are enthusiastic about the walk-in model of a maar as well as the fossil area.From Manderscheid you cycle uphill three kilometres back to Pantenburg on the main cycle path. Afterwards it goes only downhill through a wonderful railway landscape to the Moselle valley, which is characterized by vineyards. Just behind the village Plein, the cycle path leads through a 500 metre long tunnel through the volcanic rock. Surrounded by foliage and mixed forests you continue on to the town of Wittlich. After crossing the town, the vastness of the Wittlich valley opens up with the first vineyards. The medieval town of Bernkastel-Kues is now not far away. From Wittlich you cycle through forests into the Liesertal, a tributary of the Moselle. This river flows into the Moselle at the wine village of Lieser. The Maare-Moselle cycle path officially ends here, along the Moselle it is only 3 km to the International City of Vine and Wine, Bernkastel-Kues.
