Bernkasteler Schweiz - Hiking in Bernkastel-Kues on the Mosel

The "Bernkasteler Schweiz" is perhaps the smallest "Schweiz" in Germany, if not in the whole world. Accordingly unknown and untouched, but idyllically and picturesquely situated in the Tiefenbach-valley.

Directions
The hiking trail "Bernkastel Schweiz" starts at the tourist information (Moselle-Guest-Centre). Turn right and cross "Karlsbader Platz" to get through the medieval city centre and the "Römerstraße" to the suburbs. After you have walked the "Burgstraße" to the end, cross the traffic lights at the "Burgbergtunnel" (tunnel, 555 m). On the other side of the road, follow the paths into the Tiefenbach-valley. Parallel to the federal road B50 towards Longkamp, but protected by the forest, you walk through the Bach-valley. The forest path leads past a waterfall after approx. 2 km. The "Tinkeler Heiligenhäuschen" (chapel) rises steeply above the waterfall on a rocky crag. A few meters behind the chapel you turn right.  You follow  the narrow serpentine path. The trail continues uphill along a shady path along the "Bundesstraße 50", an important link between Bernkastel-Kues and the Hunsrück. After another 2 km the forest trail ends at the so-called "Bärenhalde". Cross the road to the left and you will come to a forest path on the opposite side of the road. This path offers a view of the "Golden Cross", surrounded by extensive oak forests. This wooden cross with gilded beam ends stands on a slate rock. Slightly uphill, follow the forest path for a short while, then turn into a narrow path leading to the "Bresgensruh" viewing point.  Afterwards you reach the edge of the forest with an extensive meadow landscape.  Along the edge of the forest you come to a crossroads with a rest area. You cross the meadow area and follow the path until you reach the "B50 neu" route. Then you keep to the right twice and walk downhill again to the "Bärenhalde". From here you either walk back the same way to the old town along the stream, or you take another ascent on a forest path and walk to the "Steinernen Kreuz", which can be reached via a small path. This path also leads you down to the "Tiefenbach", "Tinkelkapelle" and "Burgbergtunnel".
