Historic market square in Bernkastel

The historic Bernkastel market square in the Middle Ages reflects over 400 years of history.

The historic square is famous for its unique grace and dignity and stands out from other marketplaces in Germany, as it combines attractive comfort with unpretentious cheerfulness. It thus became the figurehead of the city. It serves as its fairground, the center and the heart of its life at the same time. The 400-year-old half-timbered houses, the Renaissance-style Town Hall (1608), St Michael´s Fountain (1606) and the much admired "Spitzhäuschen" (1416) are a reflection of the living poetry of the Middle Ages. The filigree grid on the well, the beautiful ornaments and colourful drawings on the beams of the half-timbered houses, the artistic weather vanes on the roof gables are still an eloquent testimony of the past prosperity and vivid history of the city.
