Saar-Moselle-Rhine: Saarbrücken - Koblenz

Saar, Moselle, Rhine - it's a must.

Two beautiful cycling rivers combined - the result is something to behold! Experience the Saar with its French flair and industrial history, which can still be seen today in the Völklingen Ironworks World Heritage Site, and marvel at the famous Saar Loop. When the Saar flows into the Moselle, the landscape changes noticeably, as winegrowing increasingly dominates the landscape further along the route. Look forward to the winding Moselle cycle path, which takes you from the Roman city of Trier to all the famous Moselle towns. Follow the wide loops of the Moselle, enjoy the time both in the saddle and for lots of lovely breaks. Discover Bernkastel-Kues, Traben-Trarbach and Cochem, sample the light, fruity Moselle wines and stroll to your heart's content through the narrow streets of the many charming wine villages before enjoying the sweeping view over the magnificent Rhine Valley from the Deutsches Eck in Koblenz.

Stroll through Saarbrücken and you will still feel the French flair. The city's changing national affiliation has left its mark everywhere, including in the cuisine. For the Saarlanders, eating snails, prawns or paté is a matter of course and Kir and Pastis as an aperitif are very welcome. With their sweet creations, the confectioneries are a true paradise for foodies. The St. Johanner Markt with its pubs, bistros and restaurants is the heart of life in Saarbrücken. This is where people meet or stroll through the picturesque alleyways around the market square. Between the old baroque houses you will find elegant boutiques and classy antique stores.

Day 2: from Saarbrücken to Mettlach
Length: approx. 59 km, difficulty: easy
Cycle quickly along the Saar cycle path through the former coal mining area to Völklingen. You simply have to make a stop here, as the 'Völklinger Hütte' is currently one of 33 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Germany! In terms of importance, it is on a par with the Egyptian pyramids, the Great Wall of China, Cologne Cathedral or the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.
A visit to the Völklingen Ironworks is like an adventure: deep into the dark corridors of the Möllerhalle and high up to the viewing platform on the blast furnace. Then follow the well-maintained Saar Cycle Path through the beautiful Merzig countryside to the impressive Saar Loop near Mettlach. Swap your bike for hiking boots and walk up to the "Cloef" viewpoint. Just 30 minutes and the view of the Saar loop is simply breathtaking!

Day 3: from Mettlach to Trier
Length: approx. 42 km, difficulty: easy
Today you cycle leisurely along the Saar cycle path through wooded countryside to Saarburg, where the castle towers majestically over the winding alleyways. A café break in the picturesque town center will fortify you for the rest of the cycle route. Following in the footsteps of the Romans, you cycle via Konz to the city of Trier, which was founded more than 2000 years ago. In hardly any other city has UNESCO placed so many monuments on the list of world cultural heritage sites as in Trier. Look forward to a historic city center, the Imperial Baths and the Porta Nigra.

Day 4: from Trier to Piesport
Length: approx. 46 km, difficulty: easy
This day is a real classic with a Roman past and contemporary wine culture. The route takes you to Mehring, where the Villa Rustica awaits your visit. Villa Rustica is the name given to a country house or estate in the Roman Empire. Today, the reconstructed buildings and foundation walls can be visited again. Just before your destination for the day is Neumagen-Dhron, the oldest wine village in Germany! In Piesport, the small wine village with nice cafés, ostrich taverns and wine taverns, you can review the day with a glass of Piesport Goldtröpfchen.

Day 5: from Piesport to Traben-Trarbach
Length: approx. 40 km, difficulty: easy
The two famous Moselle towns of Bernkastel-Kues and Traben-Trarbach as well as the famous wine-growing region of "Kröver Nacktarsch" crown today's day. Marvel at the colorful, diverse half-timbered houses on the picture-book market square in Bernkastel-Kues and enjoy a wonderful boat tour in Traben-Trarbach.

Day 6: from Traben-Trarbach to Cochem
Length: approx. 56 km, difficulty: easy today you will discover Enkirch, a gem of Moselle half-timbered architecture, and Zell, the wine village with the "Zeller Schwarze Katz". Take a worthwhile break in little Beilstein, proudly nicknamed "Rothenburg an der Mosel", and look forward to Cochem with its picturesque center and the old imperial castle from the 11th century.

Day 7: from Cochem to Koblenz
Length: approx. 49 km, difficulty: easy today it is worth making a detour to the medieval Eltz Castle before the Moselle cycle path takes you to wine villages such as Kobern Gondorf and Winningen, which are well worth seeing, and finally to the Deutsches Eck. The route runs almost exclusively on asphalted paths and is uniformly signposted from Trier to Koblenz. The traffic load along the Moselle varies, but between Trier and Cochem there is almost always a separate cycle path on the right or left side of the Moselle, away from the main road. Only on the last day of cycling is there a section on a wide cycle lane next to the main road.

From Bullay you have a train connection to Reil and Traben-Trabach. Shortly after Bullay, the railroad line disappears again in the Kaiser Wilhelm Tunnel and only reappears in Cochem. From Cochem, the railroad then runs completely through the Moselle valley to Koblenz. From spring to autumn, cycle buses with a maximum capacity of 22 bicycles run daily between Trier and Traben-Trarbach. Please note the respective conditions and possible transportation restrictions.Rail connections in the Moselle valleyandCycle bus
