Winemaker tour on the Moselle

From vineyard to vineyard

Get to know the wide world of Moselle wines on this special Moselle tour. Riesling, the noblest and most famous white wine grape in the world, whose small berries ripen extremely late, is one of the oldest grape varieties in the world. But not only Riesling is grown on the Moselle. Get to know the whole variety of wines and find out more directly from the winegrower. There are many opportunities: on the bike and in the evening at the winery. You will spend the night in Trier Ruwer in a wine hotel and in Neumagen-Dhron, Reil/Burg and Pommern on winegrowers' farms with modern guest rooms. Your hosts are all wine specialists and will be happy to show you their cellars and production facilities. Of course, you can get your own impression of the winegrowers' skills on site, as this tour even includes 3 wine tastings. So you can enjoy Moselle hospitality, wonderful wines and a very well signposted flat cycle path along the way.

Total distance: approx. 200 kilometers

Level of difficulty: easy

Day 1: Individual journey to Trier/Ruwertal
Arrive early in the idyllic Ruwer Valley, just outside Trier. You will spend the night in the middle of the vineyards in a beautiful hotel with its own vineyards. All car travelers can park their vehicle at the hotel, all train travelers can travel to Trier main station. No matter how you arrive, your booked rental bike will be waiting for you at the hotel to show you the lovely Moselle valley.

Day 2: from Trier/Ruwertal to Neumagen-Dhron/Piesport
Length: approx. 40 km, difficulty: easy
Accompanied by vineyards, you roll through the Ruwer valley towards the Moselle, where you are greeted by the old ferry tower in Schweich. Marvel at the small wine village of Mehring with its famous Villa Rustica, a ruin that was a magnificent country house in Roman times. Stroll through Mehring with its lovingly designed so-called Moselle alleyways and don't hesitate to open the vine-covered gates of the vineyards. Today's stage ends in Neumagen-Dhron, the oldest wine village in Germany, or in the small wine village of Piesport with its pleasant cafés, wine taverns and wine bars. There you can taste the good quality of the Piesporter Goldtröpfchen wine for yourself.

Day 3: from Neumagen-Dhron/Piesport to Reil/Burg
Length: approx. 50 km, difficulty: easy
Discover Bernkastel-Kues today, stroll through the beautiful market square, past proud half-timbered houses and continue your education in the famous wine museum. Here you will learn about winegrowing on steep slopes, about the different grape varieties, about all the work in the vineyard and cellar, about wine storage and, of course, about wine culture. After this worthwhile break, you continue on the cycle path along the banks of the Moselle to Zeltingen with its world-famous vineyards Zeltinger Himmelreich, Schlossberg, Sonnenuhr and Deutschherrenberg. You then cycle through the Kröver Nacktarsch wine-growing region to your winery in Burg or Reil near Traben-Trarbach.

Day 4: from Reil/Burg to Pommern/Treis-Karden
Length: approx. 60 km, difficulty: easy
In the morning you cycle through the Zeller Schwarze Katz wine-growing region to Bullay. Marvel at the bridge, still unique in Germany, which connects Bullay with Alf. It crosses the Moselle on two levels, with rail traffic at the top and road traffic at the bottom. Discover the romantic little town of Beilstein with its nickname "Rothenburg an der Mosel", stroll through the picturesque center of Cochem, visit the old imperial castle from the 11th century or the Rieslingstub'n. Take a seat among the historic winemaking equipment or, in fine weather, in the rustic, vine-covered courtyard with its shady canopy of vine leaves. The delicately fruity Riesling from the world-famous slate slopes around Cochem is transformed here into a fruity, mineral wine and offers delicious, light drinking pleasure. With these impressions, you can quickly reach the pretty wine village of Pommern and your family-run inn or Treis-Karden. The wine tasting takes place at a nearby winegrower.

Day 5: from Pommern/Treis-Karden to Koblenz
Length: approx. 45 km, difficulty: easy
Today a detour (4 km) to the medieval Eltz Castle, one of the most beautiful and best-preserved castles in Germany, is tempting. Wonderfully romantic and embedded in unspoiled nature, it looks like a fairytale castle come true, inviting and majestic at the same time. You then cycle back to the Moselle cycle path and cycle to the historic wine village of Kobern Gondorf. Visit a terraced vineyard here, as they are almost exclusively on steep slopes. It is mainly Riesling and Pinot Noir grapes that grow on these steep slopes. Ask the winegrower directly about his work and his products. Then enjoy the last few kilometers along the Moselle, take a short detour through the wine village of Winningen, which is one of the most beautiful villages in Germany, and look forward to a lovely end to the day in Koblenz, the city on the Deutsches Eck.

Day 6: Individual departure from Koblenz
Your varied cycling vacation comes to an end after breakfast. You have very good train connections in all directions from Koblenz main station. For those wishing to return to Trier, we recommend our practical return transfer service, which will take you with your luggage and private bikes from your hotel in Koblenz back to your starting hotel.

Trier is easy to reach by train from Koblenz and other cities. The best way to reach our partner hotels in Trier and the surrounding area from the train station is by taking a short cab ride or public transport.
You can find up-to-date timetable information and prices atwww.bahn.de.

Parking facilities at your destination

Our partner hotels in Trier offer good parking facilities, sometimes even free of charge, for the entire duration of your cycle tour. There are always sufficient parking spaces available, advance reservation is not absolutely necessary. You will receive detailed information on parking facilities at the hotel you have booked with your detailed travel documents two weeks before the start of your trip.

Condition of the cycle paths

The quality of the Moselle cycle path is excellent. There are practically no unpaved or poorly passable sections. The route runs almost exclusively on asphalted paths and is uniformly signposted from Trier to Koblenz. The traffic load along the Moselle varies, but between Trier and Cochem there is almost always a separate cycle path on the right or left side of the Moselle, away from the main road. Only on the last day of cycling is there a section on a wide cycle lane next to the main road.

Return transfer to the starting point of the tour

Every day you have the option of returning to Trier at 09:00 a.m. by transfer in a minibus (with bicycle transport trailer) (arrival there approx. 11:00 a.m.). The driver comes to your hotel and has space for you, your luggage and, if necessary, your private bike. He will drive you back to your starting hotel and thus ensure a perfect return service without the hassle of changing bikes or lugging suitcases. It is possible to bring your own bikes for an additional charge.

From Bullay you have a train connection to Reil and Traben-Trabach. Shortly after Bullay, the railroad line disappears again in the Kaiser Wilhelm Tunnel and only reappears in Cochem. From Cochem, the line then runs completely through the Moselle valley to Koblenz.
In the period from 1.5. - 31.10. the cycle bus (line 333) runs daily between Trier and Bullay with a maximum capacity of 22 bicycles.
