A lovely stroll through the romantic alleys of the Old Town is one of the highlights of a stay in this Moselle town. The small, lovingly restored shops and stores, the inviting restaurants, wine taverns, and cafés. The impressive half-timbered facades of the centuries-old houses promise pure Moselle charm. Among Bernkastel’s many sights are the historic market square, the Renaissance town hall, and St. Michael’s Fountain—both dating from the early 17th century—as well as the “Spitzhäuschen,” which is nearly 200 years older. They bear eloquent witness to a grand and often magnificent past.
Historic Buildings and Lively Festivals
The “Graacher Tor” local history museum vividly illustrates the town’s eventful history. St. Michael’s Church, with its imposing, 600-year-old tower, is one of the town’s most remarkable structures. The “Bernkasteler Doctor” is the town’s most famous wine; the legend of how this very wine cured an ailing Elector can be admired at the Doctor Fountain on the Gestade (not far from the Moselle).
Landshut Castle Ruins in New Splendor
High above the town towers the magnificent Landshut Castle, first mentioned in the 9th century. It served as the residence of archbishops and electors. A walk to the castle—which was destroyed by fire in 1692—is rewarded with a magnificent view of the Moselle region.
