Historic market square in Bernkastel

Bernkastel-Kues

The historic Bernkastel market square in the Middle Ages reflects over 400 years of history.

The square is characterized by its unique grace and dignity and stands out from other marketplaces in Germany, as it combines attractive coziness with carefree joy, thus becoming the living room of the city. It also serves as its festive hall, the center, and the heart of its life.

The 400-year-old half-timbered houses, the Renaissance Town Hall (1608), the St. Michael's Fountain (1606), and the much-admired, charming "Spitzhäuschen" (1416) reflect the vibrant poetry of the Middle Ages. The filigree work of the fountain grille, ornaments, and colorful beam decorations in the half-timbering of the houses, as well as the artistic weather vanes on the gable roofs still testify eloquently to the former prosperity and history of this city.
