Moselle village with famous vineyards and popular hiking trails

Have you ever wondered why the best wines in the world grow on the Moselle? You will find the answer during a vacation in Brauneberg. Some of the warmest temperatures in Germany are measured here.
The vineyards are usually named after the town they belong to. In Brauneberg it is the other way around. This is because the former Dusemond became the village of Brauneberg in 1925. It was therefore named after its famous vineyard, the "Brauneberg". Village and mountain have belonged together since Roman times, as one of the oldest Roman wine presses from the 2nd century in Brauneberg impressively proves.

Of Franks, Merovingians and Thomas Jefferson
The village of Brauneberg was first mentioned in a document in 588. At that time, Childebert II, King of the Franks, donated the Merovingian crown estate of Dusemond (place name until 1925, Dusemond = Latin dulcis mons = sweet mountain) to the court monastery of Verdun, which had no vineyards of its own, because of its good wine. This was the beginning of a wine tradition that the people of Brauneberg are still proud of today. They share their fondness for this special wine with Prince Charles and many other celebrities. Former American President Thomas Jefferson and Napoleon enjoyed the royal wine, as have many other connoisseurs right up to the present day.
