Directions

You start from the bus station in the Kues district. The tour takes you along the former railway track to the outskirts of the town and then up into the vineyards. Immediately you are offered magnificent views of the Moselle valley. There is a special panorama from the "Heldensicht" (Hero's View), which was voted the "Most Beautiful Wine View 2020" of the Moselle region in a public online vote on the website of the German Wine Institute (DWI). A detour to it is signposted along the way. After you have reached the outskirts of Lieser, you go up again - to St Paul's Church. Until the 16th century, it was the religious centre of fourteen villages and a much-visited pilgrimage destination. On 8 Oct. 1848, one of the largest rallies in the Rhine province took place here with 15,000 people. The valley at the foot of the church is a glacial valley of the Moselle.  The former Siebenborn Monastery is the next stopover. Today the monastery is a winery and the monastery mill houses a restaurant. A water treading pool invites you to take a break. After crossing the "Maare-Mosel-Radweg" (Maare-Mosel cycle path), you pass the sports field and enter the Noviand district of the double municipality of Maring-Noviand. Via various local roads ("Bahnhofstraße", "Bernkasteler Straße", "Kreuzberg"), you then ride through the field landscape up towards the Moselle on the high "Brauneberg" with the well-known vineyard "Brauneberger Juffer". At the top, along the edge of the slope, you cycle past the Brauneberger refuge and various rest and viewing points.  You reach the district of Monzel in the double municipality of Osann-Monzel, where you cross the "Moselstraße" and shortly afterwards come to a resting island on the edge of the village with a view of the Monzel church of St. Nikolaus. There you turn right, then immediately left again, pass a vineyard and turn left (second possibility) into a Wingertsweg, which leads through the vineyards above the wine village of Kesten. Then roll downhill into a side valley to the Kesten leisure area "Sauerbrunnen". Here, next to the fountain where the Romans are said to have quenched their thirst, a water treading pool invites you to refresh yourself. The carbonated Sauerbrunnen water comes from a depth of about 15-20 metres. Due to the high iron content, the water is rust-brown in colour.  Via the access road to the leisure area, you roll downhill towards the Moselle for a few more metres, but then turn right at the first hairpin bend and then left again uphill through a wooded area into the vineyards. You cycle steadily uphill until you reach the K52, the popular "panorama road" above the Moselle wine villages of Piesport and Minheim. You cycle only a short distance on the district road, but then immediately follow the serpentine farm tracks down into the Moselle valley to Piesport. If you like, you can visit the magnificent ceiling paintings in the rococo church of St. Michael, the so-called "Piesport Heaven". It is also worth making a detour to the faithfully restored Roman wine press on the "Ausoniusufer". A multi-functional device there recreates grape pressing according to the Roman model in a video.

The route back to Bernkastel-Kues is the "Moselradweg" (main route). The route leads along the opposite, right bank of the Moselle. This is because the Piesport "Moselloreley", a mighty rock jutting out to the shore, does not allow passage on the left bank of the Moselle. At the "Moselloreley", the Moselle is particularly deep at around 9 metres.
