Spanish mysticism
The Kues Academy invites you to the mysticism course "Spanish Mysticism".
The challenge of European mysticism as to how to formulate the tension between knowing and not knowing in relation to God continued until its late heyday in 16th century Spain: with metaphors of light and darkness, but also quite explicitly, Teresa of Avila and John of the Cross also deal with the problem of how to speak in categories of knowledge about the God who is located beyond the knowable and sayable. Their writings are at the same time testimony to a deep, living interiority on the path to mystical unity as well as to the utmost activity in shaping an appropriate way of life through the reform of the Carmelite Order. We read extracts from the ‘Dwellings’, Teresa's main mystical writing, and some poems by St John of the Cross, together with explanations, which he wrote for his confreres (The Dark Night). In this way, we get to know important spiritual figures and writings and learn what mysticism can mean. Copies will be provided. Dates: (18.10., 15.11., 29.11., 13.12.2024, 3.1.2025, 17.1., 14.2.) 14.3., 28.3., 11.4.
