Winery Wwe. Dr. H. Thanisch, Erben Thanisch
Bernkastel-Kues
The tradition of the winery Wwe. Dr. Hugo Thanisch, managed by Sofia Thanisch and her daughter Christina, can be historically traced back to the year 1636 and spans twelve generations.
The estate manages 9 hectares in the steep slate slopes of Bernkastel-Kues. The top wines come from the Bernkastel Grand Cru sites: Berncasteler Doctor, Bernkasteler Lay, Bernkasteler Badstube, and Bernkasteler Graben. The estate and local wines predominantly originate from the vineyard sites in Kues.
The most famous vineyard is the Berncasteler Doctor, which has been in the possession of the family for over 200 years. In 1882, Dr. Hugo Thanisch auctioned approximately 6,000 square meters of this exceptional vineyard for over 100,000 gold marks. Even then, this was an extremely high price that would amount to several million euros today.
Terroir and sustainability are the principles by which the vineyards are cultivated. Only Riesling is grown.
Since 1910, the estate has been a founding member of the Verband der Prädikatsweingüter (VDP).
The manor house, the "Villa Thanisch," is located on the left bank of the Moselle in Bernkastel-Kues and was built in 1884 by Dr. Hugo Thanisch and his wife Katharina in the style of the Neo-Renaissance using slate stones and sandstone ornaments. On the ground floor, the estate's wine shop is located. Here, wine tastings are conducted. The architecture is also reflected on the label, as the classic Art Nouveau label used since 1901 depicts
the manor house built in 1884 and the view of Bernkastel with the Doctor vineyard.
