Wineries with fine wines and home to a famous philosopher

Kues is the largest of the four districts of Bernkastel-Kues. Celtic finds dating back to 6000 BC suggest that it is also the oldest. Nikolaus Cusanus, the famous theologian and polymath, was born here.
Sights include the historic house where Nicholas Cusanus was born, the over 500-year-old St. Nicholas Hospital with its valuable library, the banks of the Moselle, which are ideal for walking and cycling, and the narrow streets of Alt-Kues.

Winegrowers, wineries and Cusanus
Over 150 different wines and sparkling wines from the Middle Moselle can be sampled in the wine shop in Kues and the numerous wineries make Kues ideal for a wine vacation on the Moselle. The popular Moselle cycle path runs directly along the Moselle below Kues, and there are campsites and pitches for motorhomes near the Kues harbor. The beautiful Moselauenfest in July or the traditional "Open Wine Cellar Days" in June are among the highlights of the event year.

Why is Kues pronounced like Kuus and not Küs or Küss? The answer lies in the Indo-European origin of the German language or - less cryptically - in the "e", or rather: in the elongation e! According to Wikipedia, an elongation mark is an "additional grapheme or graphemic feature (e.g. a diacritic mark) related to a vowel grapheme (vowel letter) that indicates that a vowel is pronounced long"..
In German spelling, this elongated e is only preserved in proper names. Examples of this are place names such as Soest, Flaesheim, Coesfeld or even: Bernkastel-Kues.
