Directions
A special hiking experience awaits you in the former county of Veldenz and in one of the most beautiful side valleys of the Moselle. The "Graf Georg Johannes Weg" is about 14 kilometres long - named after the most famous offspring of the Veldenz family.Start and finish is the Villa Romana in the village centre of Veldenz. At first the path winds along a mountain flank of the "Veldenzer Bach" or "Hinterbach" (streams). Along the way you can admire the view on the seat of the former counts, castle Veldenz with its ruins. Then the stream is crossed three times. At the "Thielenmühle" (mill) you climb up to the "Heidenmauer", an approx. 90 metre long stone wall - testimony of a former Celtic refuge. On the mountain spur you continue to the chapel of Thalveldenz and the ascent to the castle.Veldenz Castle was originally a fief of the Verdun High Monastery. The ancestors of the later counts can be traced back to the 11th century. Since 1107, the counts resided in the castle, which Sun King Louis XIV had dragged 1681. Today it is privately owned and only opens its doors on special occasions. The path leads you to the "Rittersturz", a rock spur where the legend says that the devil plunged down with a knight. Then follows the last ascent to the "Pionierfelsen" and "Josephinenhöhe" (view point). From here you can enjoy a fantastic view.
