Mülheim on the Moselle, famous for its renowned wines - is the official starting point of this cycle tour. The town is also the gateway to one of the most beautiful side valleys of the Moselle, which, with Veldenz and castles, is home to two Moselle towns of the former county of Veldenz

From Mülheim, the cycle tour first leads to castles, also known as the Little Venice of the Moselle. The Hunsrück region is not only home to deep forests and lush meadows, but also picturesque villages such as Gornhausen, Gräfendhorn and Merscheid, as well as the oldest town in the entire Hunsrück region: Kirchberg, granted town rights since 1259. From the Hunsrück, the cyclist will find himself on the Moselle: in Neumagen-Dhron, one of the oldest wine villages in the region. Afterwards, the route takes you past Piesport, Minheim, Wintrich, Kesten and Brauneberg back to Mülheim an der Mosel.

Directions

The tour starts in Mülheim on the Moselle. Through the former river bed of the Moselle you will drive on good paths on a relatively flat ascent through the vineyards to Veldenz. You drive through Veldenz and leave the village on the district road K 89 in the direction of Burgen, which you reach after only a few kilometres.Castles, which are in no way inferior to Veldenz in terms of romantic beauty, are often referred to as the "Little Venice of the Middle Moselle" because of their 19 bridges. You leave the wine village in southern direction on a small but well paved road. On steeply rising serpentines you cycle up the wooded slopes and finally reach the plateau, magnificent views included. With good visibility, the view extends far into the Eifel. The main ridge of the Hunsrück is still covered by the Haardtkopf, which you now have to conquer. On good paths, the route runs slightly uphill to Gornhausen at the foot of the Haardtkopf. You pass through Gornhausen and continue south - now on a well-surfaced forest path - climbing steadily in the dense forest to reach the summit ridge of the Haardtkopf. At the top, you will have a magnificent view over the Hunsrück. You roll further down to Merscheid. Shortly after Meerscheid you will reach the Dhron and the Nahe-Hunsrück-Mosel cycle path. Idyllically, this cycle path follows the Dhron from Fischbach on the Nahe River over the Hunsrück to the Moselle, the Dhron to its mouth in the village of the same name. From here you can also follow the signs of this cycle path. Via Hunolstein, Gräfendhron, Papiermühle and Dhron you finally reach the Moselle - not far from Neumagen. From here you can take the Moselle cycle path back to Mülheim.

Tip

Numerous refreshment stops along the way. Worth visiting: the Villa Romana in Veldenz and the castle ruins in Hunolstein. Please note that the tour is not signposted.The tour partly takes you along public roads (especially between the Gräfendhron and the paper mill), where increased caution is required.

Equipment

The tour should be easy to manage with an eBike (full battery) despite the considerable ascent from the Moselle valley up. For sporty cyclists a trekking bike or a MTB bike is a good choice.
