Villa Romana

The discovery of the Roman villa in Veldenz is curious: during restoration work, a cellar was to be added to the beautiful Catholic vicarage that was built in 1820. Surprisingly, the excavations brought to light a Roman baths complex, complete with the heating system! Clearly, this was once the site of an ancient country estate. As a result, the house gained not only a cellar but also an attraction, and has since is called the "Villa Romana". If its former inhabitants had known earlier what wellness oasis was slumbering under their feet, they might have picked up a spade themselves back then. Today, the "Villa Romana" houses a small museum of the city's history, a coin collection and changing art exhibitions.
In the Catholic dominated Mosel region, the county of Veldenz is one of the few Protestant enclaves, and there used to be a church that served both denominations. Later, in the 19th century, a Catholic and a Protestant parish church were built.
