The Wehlener Sundial

The Wehlen sundial is located in the vineyard opposite the village and is one of the most famous on the Moselle.

It was built in 1842 by the vineyard owner Jodocus Prüm. Like all old sundials, it shows the true local time. This means that when the sun reaches its highest point above Wehlen, the shadow of the hand falls on twelve o'clock. Central European Time (CET), which was only officially introduced in 1893, differs here at the 7th meridian by 32 minutes. The sundial is therefore about half an hour slow.

Around 1900, the designation "Wehlener Sonnenuhr" was introduced for the top-quality wine that ripens on the steep slope of the sundial. The famous vineyard is an inspiration for the many sundials in Wehlen, with the ambition to become a place of 100 sundials.
