(W)Ürziger Bergpfad - Hiking in Ürzig on the Moselle

Vines, rocks and a garden full of spices await the hiker on this relatively short tour with a very demanding ascent through vineyards and rocks to "Ürziger Höhe".

The starting point of the hike is the village Ürzig. From here the path leads through the vineyard "Ürziger Würzgarten" and the theme garden of the same name. While the Moselle village was first mentioned as Ursiacum in 700, the "Ürziger Würzgarten" vineyard dates back to the 13th century. Ürzig is regarded as the wine-growing community with the highest share of steep slopes in Germany.

Insights into the hiking tour:

From the "Rathausplatz" the way leads through the "Würzgartenstraße" into the vineyard "Ürziger Würzgarten" in the direction of "Ürziger Höhe". After a detour through the forest, the trail leads through vineyards again, past a small chapel and the geogarden and through rose garden and spice garden. An experience for all the senses. Just above the roofs of Ürzig, 160 plant species, 20 rose varieties and are no place for refreshments along the way, but in Ürzig there are restaurants and wineries (Straußwirtschaften).

Directions

From "Rathausplatz"§ the path leads you through "Würzgartenstraße" to the cemetery and there into the famous vineyard. Pass the sign "Würzgarten" and walk uphill on an asphalted farm road, then on a narrow path parallel to the slope. It gets really exhausting when you climb the mountain in zigzag on a passage of the "Erdener Klettersteig" (the path branches off shortly before a white bench). After a few metres in altitude, a bench with a protective roof invites you to rest. From here you continue in the direction of "Ürziger Höhe": the houses of Ürzig that nestle against the mountain. Cross the district road and walk parallel on a forest path to the village. At the "Bergstraße", which connects the houses in the valley with those from Ürzig's height, go down a few meters before the path branches off to the right. Turning right again, the path continues downhill into an unpaved hollow road that was already used by the Romans. Where the path turns into a tarred road, turn into the woods and pass a bridge and refuge. The path leads uphill to a transmitter mast. Then you walk again through vineyards and in an arc - past a small chapel and the geogarden - back towards Ürzig. Above the houses you descend through the theme gardens, the rose garden and the spice garden.

Tip

The tour is relatively short, so you should take your time for the theme garden with its roses and shrubs. A good head for heights is necessary at the first part of the hike. in wet weather it can be very slippery here.
