The Memmingen Peasant Articles of 1525 as forerunners of human rights

In spring 1525, an assembly of rebellious peasant associations in Upper Swabian Memmingen formulated their demands against the authorities in twelve articles. Thus, the movement titled "Uprising of the Common Man" received its manifesto. Printed immediately as a pamphlet and reprinted in numerous cities, it quickly found wide circulation. The conviction expressed within it regarding the existence of inalienable, inherent rights of every person continued to find its way underground through the centuries following the suppression of the revolt, culminating in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948.
