The history of this place of prayer is closely linked to that of the Iron Cross. According to the notes of the town scribe and notary Nikolaus Gracher from Bernkastel (died 1693), "In 1673, Venerable H. Stephan Wiltges, Prebendatus had the stone Creutz.... transported to Bernkastel on the front rocky side of the path and had a little domed heylig house built around it".
Saint's house
The present "Tinkelkapelle" was built instead of this "heylig little house". The Iron Cross was built in 1747 by Stephan Schoenes, rector of the St. Nikolaus Hospital in Kues, among others. It is with base 3, 40 meters high and made of grey sandstone. The Tinkel Chapel was restored in 1930. "Because you don't know if this Reis´ is the last, don't pass by, first say here: "Oh God lend me Gnad´, man doesn't know his end." This admonition can be read on their side of the road. The inscription on the gable reads: "1887 O MARIA HILF."
