The fountain by the Czech artist Jan Kotek on Karlsbader Platz is a gift from the twin town of Bernkastel-Kues, Karlovy vary. The sculpture symbolises eternal life, day and night. The girl's face is reminiscent of the day, the boy's face with the closed eyes of the night. The two snakes embody eternal power, and grapes, among other things, can be seen on the bodies. The waterfall cascading over 3 levels reminds us of the eternal cycle: Water is a symbol of health, cleanliness and strength.
Friendship in action
Since 1990, the town of Bernkastel-Kues has maintained a friendly relationship with the international Bohemian spa town of Karlovy Vary in the Czech Republic. Every year, a delegation from Bernkastel-Kues is invited to Karlovy Vary for the opening of the spa season at the beginning of May. An official return visit from Karlovy Vary takes place every year to Bernkastel-Kues for the Middle Moselle Wine Festival. Present from the beginning: René Achtermann, long-time head of the traffic office of the town of Bernkastel-Kues, and Willi Bottler.
