Since 2005, the plateau of Kues in Bernkastel-Kues has been designated as a climatic health resort. In the health resort Kueser Plateau you will find the four large clinics of the MEDIAN Reha Center Bernkastel-Kues next to the health resort park and the "Kurgastzentrum" (welcome centre for patients of the health clinics).

In order to be awarded the title "Heilklimatischer Kurort" and "Luftkurort", a place must meet very strict requirements. These awards are a seal of approval for health resorts whose climate is therapeutically effective. In order to guarantee the high quality standards, the air purity of the spas is regularly checked. In Bernkastel-Kues, from 02.07.2010 to 15.07.2011, two different locations in Bernkastel-Kues were measured for a good year: the spa park and the access road, the Panorama Road.

The official report of the German Weather Service on the assessment of air quality in Bernkastel-Kues comes to the following conclusion: The high air quality requirements have been met without exception. It is confirmed that the air-hygienic conditions for the confirmation as a climatic health resort and health resort with the indication "respiratory diseases" are fulfilled without restriction.

Bernkastel-Kues occupies a place in the ranking of the air quality of all climatic health resorts in Germany in the upper half. Traditionally, the climatic health resorts are mainly located in the low mountain range. The spa even complies with the strict guidelines for obtaining the "curative indication of respiratory diseases". The results of the new air survey are also very pleasing for the citizens of the Moselle town:"The very good quality of our air is also a cornerstone for the high quality of life that we find in our city," explains Wolfgang Port, mayor of Bernkastel-Kues.

To confirm the predicate "Heilklimatischer Kurort", the air quality has to be analysed and examined every 10 years. For this purpose, the air hygiene conditions at various locations in the health resort are recorded in a one-year series of measurements. The air samples are examined for coarse dust particles,"black" coarse dust particles, sulphur dioxide, fine dust and soot in the particulate matter.

The predicate "Heilklimatischer Kurort" is a seal of approval for health resorts whose climate is therapeutically effective. In Germany, the health resort laws of the federal states are decisive for state recognition and predication. The characteristic "climatic health resort" is the most widespread predicate for health resorts in Germany. In order to be recognised, the special health-promoting properties must be documented by means of a regularly repeated expert opinion.
