Swimming in the Moselle! In winter! With torches in hand ...!
What might not seem cosy at first is a real crowd puller in Bernkastel-Kues.
The torchlight swim through the wintry Moselle has been a highlight for years and attracts thousands of visitors. More than 100 sport divers accompany St. Nicholas on his way from the banks of the Moselle in Kues to the banks of the Moselle in Bernkastel.
On Saturday, 3 December, it's that time again. At around 5:30 p.m., daring swimmers, all equipped with a torch, will descend into the icy river. The start will be at Kues harbour. The finish line on the banks of the Moselle in Bernkastel, below the bridge, will be reached at about 6 pm. Here, St. Nicholas, who has arrived safely in his boat, will hand out presents to the children.
But after the torchlight float, Bernkastel-Kues is far from over. The Christmas market in the old town is open until 9 pm on Saturday and attracts visitors with great Christmas articles, high-quality handicrafts, hearty food, sweet delicacies and warming mulled wine.
