Directions
From the village square, the Napoleon trail starts through the winding alleys of Kesten. From Moselstraße the second path turns left and then right into Paulinstraße. The next turn is between two courtyards. A narrow path leads you along rural Moselle gardens to a staircase. These lead into the vineyards. Once you have reached the top of the hill, you will have a view of the beautiful valley between Osann-Monzel, Maring-Noviand and Kesten. Turning towards the Moselle, you continue through the vineyards. After about 3 kilometres, the Napoleon trail runs through the forest towards Sauerbrunnen. The Sauerbrunnen is still today a visible trace of the Romans. Julius Caesar is said to have drunk from it. The recreation area around the Acid Fountain, with barbecue area and benches, is ideal for a short rest before heading back downhill towards Kesten. Above the Kesten cemetery a narrow staircase leads you into the village. Cross the street "Am Herrenberg" and go straight ahead into Moselstraße to the house where Napoleon probably stayed overnight. Next to it is the Himmeroder Klosterhof, a branch of the abbey of the Himmerod monastery in the Eifel. The former monastery vineyard of the Cistercian order used to serve wine to pilgrims on their way to Cologne. Following this tradition, overnight stays in the privately owned monastery estate are still offered here today.
