Directions
Right at the beginning of the tour, from the starting point at the end of Veldenz, in the direction of Thalveldenz, the view up into the Hinterbach valley is worthwhile. Wild rock formations in the dense forest of the steep slopes frame the imposing Veldenz Castle.
To the start, the route runs through Veldenz in the direction of "Burgen". The county is a former, important principality on the Moselle. Headquarters of the counts was Schloss Veldenz in the village of the same name. Next to Veldenz, which is in no way inferior to the Moselle villages in terms of romantic beauty, lies "Burgen" in a wide landscape of meadows and vineyards. You leave Veldenz on a field path above the district road K 89 and follow this field and meadow path below the forest to "Burgen". You will pass through "Burgen" and cycle steadily along the Frohnbach stream and then take a field path, slightly uphill at the bottom of the valley, to the Hirzlei district. Through the Hirzlei you follow the forest path on the right side of the brook and after a few kilometres you reach the Klara Mill. A stopover for a cyclist or a glass of wine and a freshly caught trout is ideal in this beautiful place and is highly recommended. From the Klaramühle you cycle quite steeply uphill to Gornhausen. Gornhausen is a village worth living in between the valleys of the Moselle and the heights of the Hunsrück. At this point there are two possibilities to continue your journey: either you follow the very lightly trafficked, asphalted road or you take a small diversion via forest roads and pass the Barbelley viewing rock on your way up to Gornhausen.
You will pass through the village of Gornhausen at the foot of the Haardtkopf mountain and then cycle steadily uphill towards the transmitter tower. This is the highest point of the tour and also the highest elevation of the Haardtwald forest in the Hunsrück, the summit of the Haardtkopf (658m above sea level). Immediately behind the transmitter mast you turn off to the east. On well-maintained forest paths you now drive steadily downhill, crossing the K88, past the Heinzerather Kreuz, to Annenberg in the Hinterbachtal. Cross Annenberg and follow the brook, changing sides from time to time, on forest paths at the bottom of the valley, past several historic mills and the Hinterbach to our starting point in Veldenz.
