Michael the Dragon Slayer
The well basket, which can be reached via a staircase, is made of basalt. The pool is surrounded by wrought iron bars. On the back a coat of arms, which is held by two fishmen. The sandstone column of the fountain carries a sphere on which the patron saint of Bernkastel sits enthroned: Saint Michael, reinforced with sword and scales, the dragon at his feet.
In Christianity Michael is not only the leader of the heavenly hosts, but also the conqueror of the devil in the form of the dragon. The present figure of the Archangel Michael comes from the Bernkasteler sculptor Paul Simon, the original one was destroyed in World War II.
