The owls, already worshipped in antiquity as companions of the goddess Athena and therefore often used as pictures and statues in Athens, are considered wise. Also in Wehlen they greet - carved in stone - at front doors. Wooden varieties can be found in gardens, bronze ones at the village fountain.
The reason: The owl is the nickname for the inhabitants of Wehlen: The slope above the village is a breeding and nesting place for barn owls and owls, whose screams were commented by the inhabitants of the opposite Moselle side with the question: "Do you hear the owls of Wehlen again? The Eulenbrunnen has had its home in Wehlen since 1982.
