Experience history
During the land consolidation in 1990, those responsible were astonished when they found evidence of a Roman building at the foot of what the Romans called the "Dulcis mons" (Sweet Mountain), on which the "Brauneberger Juffer" vineyard is now cultivated - an ancient Roman winepress! In cooperation with experts from the Rheinisches Landesmuseum in Trier, part of the historic building was brought back to light in the following years. Although the work was made more difficult by heavy rainfall and landslides, the will to preserve this piece of posterity culture prevailed and so the complex was restored over several years, in keeping with the style of the ancient Romans.
Along the Middle Moselle, a total of eight such pressing plants have been found so far. The Kelter in Brauneberg is the oldest and best preserved wine press found in the Moselle valley. It dates from the 3rd century AD.
