The culture of the people from the Hunsrück and Eifel region is different to the culture of the people living on the Moselle valley. Nevertheless, together they build a unit: the holiday region Bernkastel-Kues:
The possibilities for a holiday in Bernkastel-Kues are legion. It is for a reason that Bernkastel-Kues is one of the most popular holiday resorts on the Moselle.
Experience the incomparable atmosphere of a picturesque old town full of history and culture. Enjoy the award-winning wines from famous locations, in one of the cosy wine taverns, in a rustic wine cellar during a wine tasting at the winery or during a guided tour through the steep slopes.
The Moselle and the Moselle valley have been the main traffic arteries of the country since time immemorial. People have settled here since the Stone Age, especially at the mouth of creeks and small rivers with clean water.
Since the Romans brought wine to the Moselle, viticulture and wine trade have been the dominant economic factors. The mild climate supports a culture in which music sets the tone rather than the assertion of claims to power. The winegrowing, especially on the steep slopes of the Moselle, is hard work. The extremely well-kept small villages with the lovingly preserved half-timbered houses and the good condition of the dry stone walls on the steep slopes of the vineyards are eloquent testimony to this culture.
The county is a world of its own! To this day, membership of the former county of Veldenz has shaped the self-conception and not insignificant self-confidence of the people in the county.
Originally, the county included the communities of Veldenz, Andel, Brauneberg, Burgen, Gornhausen and Mülheim. A wide, picturesque valley with vineyards, meadows, fruit trees and fields leads to Veldenz. Next to Veldenz, which in its romantic beauty is in no way inferior to the Moselle villages, lies Burgen in a wide meadow and vineyard landscape of the Moselle high plateau. If one drives from Veldenz on the serpentine road up into the Hunsrück, one reaches Gornhausen on a plateau.
The Hunsrück is a striking contrast to the Moselle. Starting in Bernkastel the road winds up the densely wooded ridge in serpentines.
At the top the forest opens to a hilly open landscape, which in the quadrilateral Monzelfeld, Longkamp, Kommen, Hochscheid and Kirchspiel Kleinich is only occasionally interrupted by smaller forest areas. If you are looking for pure nature, silence and tranquillity in a charming landscape, this is the place for you.
