Sculpture Happy Helmsman - Fröhlicher Steuermann

The “Fröhlicher Steuermann” (jolly helmsman) statue is a widely known symbol of a man drunk on wine. He is resting his round bearded head, smiling knowingly, on a wine barrel, in order to listen to the bubbling and thus advertises its valuable contents.

He was part of a further, only half preserved wine ship, which was discovered in the basement of the castle of Neumagen. An interesting fact is that his comrade on the other, almost completely preserved wine ship, has a rather sulky expression. The relief counts among the many relief stones from the 2nd to 4th century AD - originally designed as Roman gravestones - which were installed in the basement of the castle and rediscovered during excavations at Neumagen-Drohn in the late 19th century.
