They are evidence that the Romans grew vines in top locations, and it is here that you can see, taste and feel our history under your feet!
"Erdener Treppchen" and "Erdener Prälat" are among the best vineyards on the Mosel, and have been for a very long time, as the Roman wineries tell us. The production routes were short: the grapes were pressed directly on site. The Romans crushed the grapes in a large basin with bare feet or mashers. Then they filled the still dripping wet mass into a press basket and pressed it out as best they could. The juice flowed off into smaller basins from which it could be drawn easily. It was limed to deacidify and clarify it. But where was the large wine cellar for so much young wine? Since the site was state-owned, the Romans probably took it to the Mosel nearby and shipped it to Trier, perhaps even to the imperial wine cellar. The army also needed wine to supply the troops.
After the tour, take the time to climb the Erden Klettersteig nearby. Here you will experience first-hand how arduous the work in the vineyards was and still is. Be sure to taste the wine that grows here!
