Manderscheid Castles

The two ruins of the upper and lower castles are located near the Eifel town of Manderscheid.

The Manderscheid castles, located in the picturesque Eifel region in Rhineland-Palatinate, are an impressive destination for tourists interested in history and nature. The castles consist of two fortresses facing each other: the Oberburg and the Niederburg, which are separated by the Liesertal valley.

The Niederburg, the older of the two, was built in the 12th century and served as the residence of the Lords of Manderscheid. It impresses with its well-preserved walls and towers, which provide a fascinating journey into the past. The upper castle, built in the 14th century, sits majestically on a rocky outcrop and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

A tour of the castles takes visitors through winding staircases, impressive knights' halls and along mighty battlements. Historical events and knights' games take place regularly, bringing the Middle Ages to life in a lively way. The hiking trails around the castles also invite you to take long walks and offer numerous photo opportunities.
