St. Stephen's Catholic Parish Church in Zeltingen-Rachtig
The origins of today’s St Stephen parish church go back to a 7th century chapel according to unconfirmed lore. The oldest part is the late-Gothic choir, which was remodeled in the early 17th century.
Major works of art of St Stephen parish church are the St Stephen high altar (1627), the Ausonius altar (1628) and the altar of Mary (1639). They are accredited to the group around Johann Ruprecht Hoffmann the Elder from Trier, who created several altars and the chancel of Trier Cathedral. The sacristy next to the choir dates back to 1640. The church gained its present form after construction of a new nave in 1720 and a new western tower in 1739. The choir stalls and the communion rail were acquired from the Convent at Machern after its secularization. The windows of the nave show impressive coats of arms. Only in 1803, Zeltingen became an independent parish and St Stephen Church became parish church. Source: www.pfarrei.de
