Special exhibition at the museum: Enamel - old art rethought
Enamel - ground glass fused onto metal - is a fascinating material.
Enamel - old art rethought - special exhibition at Museum Kloster Machern Enamel - ground glass fused onto metal - a fascinating material. Utility objects, jewellery and art - anything is possible.
Enamel - a challenge. The CKI e.V. has taken up this challenge. A group of international artists who are committed to maintaining, preserving and promoting friendly contacts on an international level. In particular, to raise the profile of enamel art.
While the Egyptians knew a kind of forerunner of enamelling techniques, namely cell inlays, the first real enamel works were found in Cyprus, where they were probably produced in the 12th century BC. The Celts cultivated it as an object of exchange. Enamel flourished in the Middle Ages and countless gospels and reliquaries were decorated with enamel. This can also be discovered in the museum's icon collection.
Centres of enamel art emerged in the Rhine-Meuse region, later in Limoges, France, and still later in Rostov, Russia, and Hungary. They were and are decisive for the development of this art form.
With industrialisation, the field of application of enamel also changed - now it was no longer an ornament, jewellery or expression of religious worship, but became an object of daily use.
