Philosophy course: ‘Leibniz: Man and Image – The Course on the Film’
Philosophy & Film: Discover Leibniz's thoughts on individual worldview and Edgar Reitz's new film.
Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646-1716) thought (among countless other things) about what a human is and what the world is in which they experience. Every person is an individual. A person has a completely individual perspective on the world in which they experience; therefore, every person sees the world as a different image - and this also includes other people. A single image can impossibly depict an object; for this, one would need the infinity of all views on this thing. This is the subject of works by Leibniz that we read in excerpts (Metaphysical Treatise; Monadology), and it is also the subject of the new film by Edgar Reitz.
