Cusanus course: Cusanus as a reformer
From 138, he was co-regent alongside Antoninus Pius, and from 161 he was emperor. The period of his main regency was characterised by wars; he died in 180 during a campaign on the Danube. Marcus Aurelius was committed to Stoic philosophy throughout his life. The "Self-reflections", written roughly between 172 and 178, i.e. in times of war, are a collection of personal reflections and philosophical thoughts that he wrote himself. They are not intended as a systematic philosophical treatise, but as a kind of diary in which he admonished himself (and his son Commodus) and tried to organise his thoughts and practise Stoic wisdom. In his introspections, Marcus Aurelius is thus primarily concerned with questions of life, morality, dealing with difficulties and self-control. The Self-Considerations are divided into 12 books; we will go through the work book by book.
