Wine enjoyment

Mineral, finely fruity white wines with relatively low alcohol content are the hallmark of the winegrowers and wineries in the Moselle wine-growing region. Wines that go particularly well with a modern lifestyle and light cuisine with international influences.

Great climate
The unique filigree character of the wines from the Moselle and its tributaries Saar and Ruwer is due to the special geological, topographical and climatic conditions in the river valleys. The Moselle, Saar and Ruwer wind in tight loops through a cultural landscape in which the Celts and Romans already cultivated wine 2000 years ago. The region is the fifth largest German wine-growing region with some 8,700 hectares of vineyards. Almost half of the vines grow on steep slopes of slate. The steep slopes and terraces facing south or southwest provide the vines with an excellent microclimate.

Queen Riesling
Riesling is the most important grape variety and is cultivated on about 5300 hectares of vineyard area. On the mineral-rich slate soil of the steep slopes, the Riesling finds ideal growing conditions. The vines' roots penetrate metres deep into the soil to supply themselves with water and minerals. The late ripening Riesling has enough time in the sites on the Moselle, Saar and Ruwer to develop a great variety of aromas and finesse.

Vibrant terroir
Thanks to the soils of 400 million year old, weathered clay slate and a long ageing phase, the wines are characterised by a characteristic minerality. In the relatively far north, the winegrowers succeed in producing light wines with relatively little alcohol and yet full flavour. Even the stronger dry wines appear fine and elegant due to their minerality.
