Brauneberger Juffer

The name Juffer is Mosel Franconian and refers to an older woman. According to a legend, the Duchess of Montmercy hid here for twelve years. Her husband had been beheaded after a failed rebellion against Richelieu in 1632. The many tears the Duchess shed are said to have watered the soil of the vineyard and thus gave him his bouquet.
However, there is a second version: One of the biggest landowners of the city, the chamberlain Wunderlich had three daughters. To increase his vineyard property, he wanted to marry the three to rich but ugly men. The three resisted and did not want to marry. They preferred to drink the wine alone rather than share it.
