The location is reminiscent of Nicholas of Kues, the most famous son of the city. He was a universally educated philosopher, theologian and mathematician. He was born in Kues in 1401. In 1448 he was ordained cardinal and in 1450 bishop of Brixen. In 1464 he died in Todi, Italy. His body was buried in Vitoli, but his heart was buried at his request in the chapel of the St Nicholas Hospital, which he had donated.

Both the St. Nicholas Hospital with its precious library and the birthplace of Nicholas of Kues can be visited today.
